Hearn Wants Berlanga Vs. Munguia
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Eddie Hearn has lined up Edgar Berlanga for Jaime Munguia if the Mexican cannot get the Canelo Alvarez fight.

Munguia stopped John Ryder in the ninth round, which included four knockdowns, to call out Canelo for an all-Mexican clash. The current reports suggest that it is a choice between Jermall Charlo and Munguia for a fight on the Cinco De Mayo weekend. But the fact that Munguia fights on DAZN could hamper him.

PBC has shown that they like to keep their fights in-house, which is why Charlo will be the favorite, given that he and Canelo are with PBC. Jermall was also linked with facing Canelo before the Mexican faced his brother, Jermell Charlo. So if that Alvarez fight does not happen, Hearn wanted Berlanga. He and Munguia fight on DAZN, removing obstacles that may otherwise emerge with differing networks.

Berlanga Vs. Munguia

“If they don’t get that fight made, I want to make Jaime Munguia against Edgar Berlanga. If Berlanga can win on February 24th impressively. Mexico against Puerto Rico, that’s a big fight at MSG. It’ll fill the place up. So, I think that’s a good fight. If Berlanga looks great against McCrory, he’s got a chance of getting the Munguia fight if Canelo doesn’t select him.

“Canelo is still all about business, and he could look at that now and go, ‘I like that fight. If that’s a big fight, I’ll take it because I win. Munguia-Benavidez is a great fight. Berlanga-Benavidez. Benavidez is very good. [David] Morrell is a big problem. Morrell is the guy that’s not going to get the fights because there’s no value in fighting,” Hearn stated

Canelo Vs. Benavidez

Despite this, boxing fans want to see the David Benavidez fight. The Mexican Monster is the current WBC Interim Champion at 168, a position he has held for over a year. He beat Demetrius Andrade in his last fight, as the calls on him to fight Canelo increased. Although that may be the case, the WBC still needs to order the mandatory. At the same time, Alvarez made it clear that he was the ‘king’ of the division, giving him the right to choose who he faced.

“Right now my dates are May and September. Those are the dates that I always look to fight. This Monday I’m gonna have a meeting and see what’s next. There’s nobody on the table just now. Honestly, I’ve been doing other things. Handling my businesses, travelling with my wife, so I don’t know where those names came from.

“Look, a lot of things can be said, but, at the end of the day, I’m the king and I can do what I want.” “We’ll see. Like I’ve said, always, I’m here to make the good fights. If that’s a good fight for September, or he has to wait a little bit, we’ll see. At the end of the day, sometimes the fights are bigger when you have to wait a little bit,” Canelo stated

But based on Benavidez’s reaction to Munguia’s win over Ryder, he was not impressed.

“This is an easy knockout. That’s why they ducked me,” Benavidez stated
